Physician’s Assistant programs are constantly evolving.
In fact until recently, Physician Assistant programs awarded associate degrees and certificates in addition to bachelor’s and master’s degrees. Now the Accreditation Review Commission on This has changed. The Education for becoming a Certified Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) requires that all programs offer graduate level degrees.
Physician’s Assistant Bachelor’s Degree (BA-PA)
The accelerated 4-year program allows the Physician Assistant student to earn their bachelor’s degree in conjunction with their graduate level Physician Assistant certificate. The first two years usually will involve courses in liberal arts, mathematics and basic sciences. The final two years includes nine months of clinical course work as well as 12 months of clinical rotations. The majority BA-PA physician’s assistant programs will admit students on a conditional pre-professional status, until the first two years are complete.
Physician’s Assistant Master’s Degree (MA-PA)
Schools that offer a master’s degree require that their students have earned an undergraduate degree prior to entering the physician’s assistant program. The first year emphasizes courses in anatomy and physiology, psychology, pediatrics, emergency medicine, pharmacology, microbiology, internal medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, geriatrics, and surgery. The second year emphasizes clinical experience in medical specialties as well as in primary care,
Physician vs. Physician’s Assistant
A Physician’s Assistant professional responsibilities may vary depending on training and experience. Generally, Physician Assistants handle all but the most complicated medical cases. Unusual or hard-to-manage cases may require a referral to the physician or a consultation between the patient, the PA and physician. All 50 states, DC, Guam and the US Virgin Islands allow physician assistants to prescribe medication.
Physician assistants are also educated in the broad spectrum of medical and surgical care, allowing them to practice in the variety of specialties rather than one specific area of study.
The development prepaid plans and the growing acceptance of Physician Assistants by other health care professionals have combined to strengthen the job market for physician assistants.
A physician assistant will work wherever physicians or health care organizations employ them. They can be found in virtually all health care settings. There are even a small number of Physician Assistants who have chosen to specialize in Holistic counseling, wellness consulting, and alternative and complementary medicine.
About 30% of Physician’s Assistants work in hospital environments
The practice that the physician assistant must work under the direct supervision of licensed physicians is slowly changing. Many nonclinical positions have appeared for Physician Assistants in recent years and as HMOs have become more common new opportunities have opened up for Physician assistants with a wider range of skills.
